‘Pilam ex urticis extrahite’

 

The current Buckhorn Weston Cricket Club was founded in 1997.  There had been a previous “pub” side in existence in the mid 1980’s which played its fixtures in a field attached to Weston House.  Although this side folded relatively quickly, one of its annual fixtures against an invitation side, the Wastrels, continued to be played year in, year out.

With the arrival in the village of Dave Rose, Bob and Lynda Farrand and others, and with the match against the Wastrels still being enjoyed, the idea of forming a new, more organized, team became a reality.  The Watts family kindly leased some ground behind Hope Cross and with the great help and hard work of Bob Carter, the beginning of a square was first laid in the autumn of 1996.

During our first season of 1997 we had relatively few games but the club gradually acquired equipment and the wherewithal to grow.  Within five years the club had about 20 fixtures a year and the quality of it’s playing membership and fixtures list was commanding interest and support from the local community.

In 2003 a change of ownership of the grounds enabled our club to have a 30 year lease and with this security of tenure we were able to apply for grants to improve the ground, our facilities and build an excellent pavilion which opened in August 2008.  At this time a number of youth teams joined the club attracted by the opportunities and we currently cater for juniors from under 9’s through to under 15’s as well as being home to North Dorset Girls.

With the improvement of facilities we have been able join local leagues, both midweek and weekend, and we are founding members of the Three Counties League.  The community we serve has spread from just the village to a much wider area.  We warmly welcome all cricket enthusiasts, players and non players alike.
