A low scoring thriller went the way of Buckhorn u13’s tonight.

Our four strike bowlers – Tommy Stewart, John Cooper, Alistair Johnson and Sam Godfrey all did a great job and keep the runs down and the pressure on, aided to by two superb run outs from Tommy and John, the second being a 40 yard flat throw that broke the stumps. Stalbridge Reds held back to 50 for 5 from 16 overs.

Unfortunately the batting did not work as well and Buckhorn found themselves 4 for 3 after only 3 overs. But the side held together and some powerful hitting (with a healthy sprinkle of luck) from Rory Dodd (23 n.o.) ably assisted by James Patterson, Grady Crittal, Sam Godfrey and Harry kept things slowly moving along. It was left to Ed Munday to hit the winning run and prompt the pitch invasion.

Bring on Stalbridge Blues!

Many will know that our Chairman Jeremy Owen gave his daughter away last week-end, and we wish the happy couple well.  So using a wedding brides expression, the Team that Buckhorn selected for the match against Horningsham was ‘something old , something new, something borrowed, something blue‘.  The old is of course the captain, the blue is because we were royally thumped, the borrowed was everyone using each others equipment, and the new was for the three new players who kindly stepped in to play, on a day difficult to get a team out.

On enquiring whether the new players would prefer to bat or bowl, to a man they agreed they were batsman, so it may come as a surprise to find that Ollie Rance took 3 wickets for 38, Fred Vernon 2 for 21 including Horningshams big century making batsman, and Dan Boyle ( NZ ) bowled a tidy 8 overs of spin.  However you may also be surprised not find a mention of their batting in the rest of this report!

Having lost the Toss we were asked to field on a surprisingly lively artificial wicket, and fast outfield. Marcus took the new ball, and delivered a thrillingly hostile spell, which had the batsmen defending and was unlucky not to take a wicket.  George Jones also had a tidy 8 overs finishing 1 for 45.  Sadly we struggled to take those crucial first couple of wickets, a couple of missed catches and Horningsham, with a first wicket partnership of 126, were on their way to a huge 308.  Theo Biggs bowled 4 overs of leg spin, again causing a few problems for the batsman, but with the platform set, they could afford to take chances.

Despite us collapsing to 72 all out – and it is hard to pick out anyone who really did well – strangely this match felt like a good game of cricket, and to be fair, the opposition took some great catches.  Played in a good spirit, on a beautiful day, and a pint of cider in the Bath Arms afterwards, what better way to spend an afternoon.  Beaten but not bowed, I am sure there will be a few batsman fired up to come back and have another go.

With some of the superstars away, it was left for veteran Alex Gibbs to captain a younger and mixed side against Port Rejects.  Having lost the toss we took the field with a couple of dads kindly helping out.  Fortunately we had George Wayman, back from Uni, behind the stumps, who then gave Dan Taylor the gloves and bowled a very tidy 8 overs first change.  Harry Woolway and Zac Wheeler had opened the bowling, restricting the run rate well, although Harry’s second spell was probably better than his first.  Marcus Mathew , a newcomer to the club, his family recently back from Germany, also bowled and fielded well, and looks certain to be a very valuable all rounder to the club.  In fairness we were always short of a bowler and after experimenting with Alex Corbett and Dan Taylor, Alex was forced to bowl himself.  Port Rejects were as bemused by his slow right hand round as Roy the umpire was irritated by him running down the wicket , and they managed to give away three wickets in fairly short order, eventually being bowled out for 216.

George and Harry replied in contrasting but great one day style, setting us on our way to 100 in less than 10 overs.  George getting 84 in gloriously imperious fashion before being bowled.  Alex Corbett at 3 made his first 50 for the club, and Buckhorn comfortably got home with in excess of 10 overs to spare.  Despite a fine display all round, Harry’s not out 62 was perhaps the pick of the day, a solid openers innings during which he gave no chance, showing maturity far beyond his age.

Bowling Figures: Woolway 1 for 22, Wheeler 1 for 36, Mathews 2 for 29, Wayman 2 for 35, all off 8 overs Gibbs 3 for 18 off 3 overs.

Batting: Wayman 84, Woolway 62 NO, Corbett 56.

Team : Alex G ( capt ) , Alex C, George W, Cortland T, Dan T, Harry W, Zac W, John F, Marcus M.

U15s roll on…
The U15s visited Kilmington on a pleasantly warm evening for the second time this season, this time for a League match where they had ambitions of continuing with their 2013 season winning run (3 from 3).

Jemma won the toss and elected to field first. Buckhorn’s fielding and catching looked a little rusty at times with a number of spilled chances, but the bowlers continued to toil away. Kilmington did not score freely, but extras totalled 22 and one of the Kilmington openers was quick to punish any lose balls, before eventually being caught for 43. Kilmington made a very gettable 83 in their 16 overs losing just 3 wickets along the way.  Six bowlers were used with Angus, Harry, and Max taking a wicket apiece.

In reply Harry (43*) – looking to continue his fine form – and George (35) set about knocking off the runs in quick time (8.1 overs). However, Buckhorn lost George when the score was on 83 and one run needed for victory.  The U15s look forward to next week’s encounter at home against Shillingstone B which will be their first home game of the 2013 season.

BWCC v Hazlebury Bryan CC (TCL) – Sunday 12th May 2013

This Sunday’s fixture began with a minutes silence in honour of local Olympic Sailing Champion Andrew Simpson, who recently passed away.

Buckhorn skipper Adam B won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket that would play well, but in weather that did not look like improving. Simon B and Harry Woolway opened the batting together for the first time in the TCL, hoping to begin well and give Buckhorn a winning start to their league season. The pair started cautiously, but after the first 10 overs had passed Simon B cut loose and started playing shots to all parts of the ground. Harry was looking assured and played confidently. Both batsmen played the bowling well and ran hard and purposefully between the wickets. Simon blazed past 50 and carried on to register his first 100 of the season just after drinks. Harry went past 50 and didn’t look like giving in. Unfortunately, Simon fell in the 23rd over for 107, which brought Alex Corbett to the crease on his TCL debut. Harry and Alex both looked confident, carrying on from the groundwork laid by the opening stand. Alex hurried to a fluid 50 as Buckhorn set their sights on a total of 300. Having played with a maturity beyond his years Harry did not look like giving his wicket away, allowing him to make it past 100 for the first time in his cricketing career. After a raise of the bat, Harry and Alex carried on in ‘agricultural’ fashion. With a few overs left Alex (75) fell and Charlie Esson (2*) entered the fray to help Harry (125*) push Buckhorn to a massive total of 332/2 in their 40 overs.

The bowling display was to be impeded by soggy conditions overhead and under-foot, but this did not dampen Buckhorn’s resolve. Tom Dunn and Daffy opened the bowling and persevered with a soap-like match ball. Buckhorn’s troubles at the start of the innings allowed Hazlebury Bryan to get off to a quick start. The breakthrough came when Simon B created a sharp run out chance that sent the Hazlebury Bryan opener back to the warmth and dry of the pavilion. This then started a procession of wickets to fall, but to an unlikely bowler – Charlie Esson. Charlie’s last bowling display before this had not gone to plan, however Charlie could not seem to bowl a ball that didn’t overcome a Hazlebury Bryan batsman. After the spells of Charlie (6/29) and Adam B had finished, Hazlebury Bryan were a long way behind the rate and out of sight of victory. The re-introduction of Daffy (1/35) and the welcoming of another TCL debutant, Marcus Matthews (2/4), to the attack brought a swift conclusion to the chase at 168 all out and a maximum point victory to Buckhorn.

Gillingham v BWCC, 5th May (Ranston)

Buckhorn Weston CC played their first Ranston game of the season last week (8/5), traveling to Gillingham. With the ground wet under foot, Buckhorn lost the toss and were put into field.

Andy ‘ Ripper’ Hillier opened up from the one end and started strongly, taking a wicket with the first ball; finishing the over with 2-2. George ‘ The Oven’ Ovenden followed with a maiden, with Hillier continuing the fine form to take a further wicket. As Buckhorn lost grip on the ball, the reins also begin to slip as Gillingham ended with 90 all out.

In return, Buckhorn got off to a slow start and soon lost Dan ‘ XXXXhouse’ Brickell but retained Andrew Hoskins, who went on to score a total of 27 not out. Sam ‘Sharkey’ Baker stepped up to save the day, however, hitting the ball out the park 5 times and scoring a total of 40; exhibiting his explosive batting skills. Jay ‘Wesi’ Westcar finished off the game in style with a maximum.

Man of the Match: Sam ‘Sharkey’ Baker

Buckhorn Weston win by 7 wickets.
