News 2015

Buckhorn Weston combined their Cricket Club annual Open Day/6-a-side competition with a village Get Together in memory of MP Jo Cox.  North Dorset MP Simon Hoare was our guest and attended with his daughters who enjoyed helping Dad judge our cake contest!  The 6-a-side competition was won by our very own Buckhorn Stingers and we were also treated to a demonstration match featuring our Under 11’s “Buckeroos” and our new Ladies team (the LBW’s  – Ladies Buckhorn Weston)

It was a lovely day with plenty of sunshine in a wonderful setting.  Many thanks to all who helped make the day such a success and to all our visitors and supporters for coming along.

I know it’s not cricket, but superfast broadband is now available to most people in Buckhorn Weston served by the Templecombe exchange  –  or for those in Kington Magna, on the East Stour Exchange.  To get any advantage you usually need to be within around 1 mile or less (road distance) from your green cabinet but I’m getting 25Mbit/sec at just over the mile from the cabinet outside our cricket ground.

Remember you will have to sign up with your existing (or another) Internet Service Provider to transfer over to the fibre-based service.  Check with your ISP (or on the contractor’s website Openreach) to find out if your phone line might be able to get a faster fibre-based internet.  Will it cost more?  Well it all depends as it will be a new contract but I have heard of people getting it for the same or even cheaper price because they were on an old (expensive) tariff or the ISP is doing a special offer.  As always, it is best to talk to your potential ISP.

It’s been a long wait but this Dorset Council funded project is a year ahead of the original schedule, and around 20 times faster!!!

Construction of the perimeter drainage channel was carried out successfully by M J Abbott in May 2015 and the benefits have becomes apparent as the season progressed  –  the outfield has become much drier, it has recovered more quickly after heavy rain has fallen, and it has become easier to cut the grass.

As this work did not take up the whole amount of the grant, we have been able to ask M J Abbott Ltd. to carry out additional work.  In October the outfield was verti-drained, fertiliser was applied and the ground was overseeded.  Further verti-draining will take place before and after the 2016 playing season and in early 2017.  We now have authority from Sport England to use the balance of the grant to place additional drains in the south-west corner of the field where the ground level is lower and hence the ground tends to be slower to dry out.  We are currently awaiting a price for completing this work.

The Club wishes to reiterate its thanks to Sport England for putting us in a position to improve our drainage so substantially, to Total Turf Solutions Ltd. for the professional and attentive project management work, and to M J Abbott Ltd for the tidy and efficient way in which they carried out their work at the ground.

There will be Singles and Team competitions.  All ages welcome – conkers and strings provided!

So just turn up to test your aim and skill.

A small entry fee will be required, and all proceeds to the Church Bell Fund.
