News 2017

A great game against Chalke Valley – maybe some words here soon but meanwhile take a look at our Facebook feed above and click the “more” link to see the result!

The season has started really well for Buckhorn Weston Cricket Club at their very attractive ground at the edge of the village.  For the first time the Club is to have a Ladies team.  The first practice has already taken place, and some friendly fixtures will be arranged for the second half of the season.  Next year a more structured sequence of fixtures will be arranged.

The Club has also benefited from a major grant from Viridor Credits, using monies from the Landfill Communities Fund.  This has enabled the Club to purchase a range of items of much needed maintenance equipment  –  new gang mowers, a new pitch roller, refurbishment of the artificial playing strip, new lightweight sight-screens and new netting for the practice nets.  The Club said: “We are most grateful to Viridor Credits for making this grant available to us.  Our ground is used a lot during the playing season, and most of our maintenance equipment was getting old and unreliable.  Viridor have put us in a position to overcome this problem, which will make life so much easier for our band of volunteers who prepare the ground for every match.”

The Club runs the Buckeroos side, which will be playing in the North Dorset Under 11 League this year.  The Stingers  –  a social side  –  play evening games once a week, and there are longer games on most Sunday afternoons.  The Club is always interested to hear from potential new players, of all ages and genders.  For more information please visit the Club’s website www.buckhornwestoncc.co.uk

On Saturday 17th June the Club will be holding an Open Day with a 6-a-side contest.  There will be a BBQ and a licensed bar, and the Club hopes that everyone will come along and enjoy the occasion.

The Buckeroos have begun their season with a nail biting victory over Sherborne.

The Buckeroos batted first, and it has to be said, somewhat rustily!  The shining exception was Fergus Dodd who smacked 20 runs including 4 boundaries.  Without his contribution, we would never have got to our eventual total of 269, and crucially, we only lost 2 wickets.

Sherborne set off very steadily and were cruising to victory half way through their innings at 50 for 0.  Then came an over of which we will almost definitely not witness the like of again this season.  Step forward Leo Cooke – a triple wicket maiden!   Wow!   A further wicket for Oliver Price in the next over put Buckhorn firmly back in charge, until their last 2 batsmen came in and promptly put on 30 runs – EEK!  A run out helped us, but they had still crept to within 6 runs of our total when Felix –  with the penultimate ball of the match  –  bowled their Skipper.  Phew!

Well done all and special mentions for Alexander for coping so manfully with his shiner – more catching practice needed (!) – and to Rhodri for coming along as sub.

Result – Buckhorn won by 11 runs.
