‘Buckhorn getting closer’

Buckhorn made a rare away trip to Horningsham with high hopes of a win, which is what they required if they wanted to keep their title hopes alive. Buckhorn arrived to the unusual sight of the Horningsham players rolling their artificial wicket (?!). The boundary to one side looked very short, whereas the other looks somewhat more substantial. Adam, therefore, had no doubts as to whether not to bat first if he won the toss. As it turned out, BWCC won the toss and batted.

Another new opening partnership strode to the crease, with young Marnhull and ex-BWCC player Ashley Young joined Simon B. Both looked in decent nick at the start and made a steady start, with some well timed strokes over the field combined with brutal slashes across the line. The (artificial) wicket was playing well and Simon B was settling in. Ashley was playing well, but went for one shot too many and was out caught for 22, bringing to an end the opening stand of 77. Next in was Harvey Chinnock and he carried on with Simon B. Both batted carefully as Horningsham looked to make up for a sloppy(ish) start. Harvey stayed with Simon B until the 31st over, having batted maturely and assuredly, but a mix up saw him run out for 28. Meanwhile Simon B was batting on and went past 50, looking to get Buckhorn somewhere near 200. The last 10 overs saw BWCC look to push the score on, which was exactly the intention of Simon B and (brother/captain) Adam B. Simon B hogged the strike and got himself past the century mark with a quick 2; but had to get straight back to work and see BWCC in. Adam B was swinging at everything, knowing the task he had to carry out, but was bowled for 4, missing a straight one. New man Andy Binnington was in at 5 and attempted to carry on the work Adam had started, but also suffered at the hands of Simon B’s running (despite having a dodgy knee) and was run out for 2. With time running out BWCC were not far short of 200 and on the last ball of the innings Simon B and George Jones got in yet another mix up and Simon B was run out for 120, but BWCC had reached their target of 201, George Jones finishing on 4* and BWCC being assisted by the 22 extras.

Overall, BWCC made short work of the Horningsham total, but the Extras conceded got Horningsham a lot closer than they should have gotten. Adam B and Daffy (who conceded 20 extras on his own) opened up and put early pressure on the Horningsham openers. Adam B bowled straight through and returned 1/23 from his 8 overs. Oli Gash came on 1st change for 4 overs before he started suffering with a bad back; but finished with figures of 1/9 from 4 overs.  Simon B’s introduction brought the breakthroughs, as he bowled a sharp 5 over spell, which saw him nearly complete a hat-trick, snaring figures of 3/28 in his first spell. George Jones () and Harvey Chinnock bowled good spells and both made important breakthroughs; however the tenth wicket proved hard to find. Daffy also was brought back for a 2nd spell, but couldn’t find a wicket, but finished with 1/47 from 8 overs (and only 27 off the bat!!). Simon B came back for a second spell and finished the innings, bringing his figures to 4/28 from 5.3 overs. Horningsham finished 150 all out, with Hilleary providing the only resistance with 46.

Buckhorn take maximum points from that game and with Mere beating Warminster BWCC move 9 points clear at the top of the table, with one game left. A third TCL title in three years is inching ever closer; but the BWCC boys just need to see off Bruton (away) before any celebrations can begin.
