News 2011

The 2011 Annual Dinner and Awards took place on 25th November 2011 at Cucklington Village Hall with our President, Malcolm Hooker presenting the trophies.  Malcolm referred to the many challenges facing all organised team sports, namely the competing pressures of modern social and family life.  However the reward of seeing youngsters develop into talented cricketers and sportsmen was not only good for the club but also for their own confidence and character that would last them a lifetime.

The first awards were Continue reading

What a wonderful August Bank Holiday Sunday, thanks to all the visitors, all the volunteers, and the weather.   Overall we estimate we had at least 250 people during the day who enjoyed the cricket, the food, the bar, the ice creams, cream teas and other extras such as the Buckhorn Barrows and the Junior cricket.

Oh yes, and the cricket!  Buckhorn Weston beat the Armed Forces by six wickets, although there were periods when the home supporters got a bit worried.  So did the scorers – a couple of sixes nearly got them!

The Club would like to record its thanks to Sam Drury and his colleagues at the Stapleton Arms, to Andrew Barclay Butcher’s, to Kav and Anne Marie Javi at the Three Horseshoes, Batcombe, to Mike’s Ices, to Hall and Woodhouse and to Orangements.  Also for donations of cash and raffle prizes to The Tank Museum, The Fleet Air Arm Museum, Church House Investments Ltd, The Folio Society, John Trotter and the Copy Shop, Gillingham.  Our thanks as well to Bernard and Monica deSalis for the loan of their marquee.  Finally, we would like to record our gratitude to all those who so generously supported the event.

The Club’s appeal for cricket kit to donate to the Afghan Youth Cricket Support Organisation led to a generous response.  Particular thanks go to Dan Savident and his family, who walked all the way from Yeovilton to Buckhorn Weston and raised over £700 of the total achieved on the day.

Please enjoy these…

Dan Savident and his family set out early on Bank Holiday Sunday to walk from Yeovilton Air Base 17 miles away to arrive at Buckhorn Weston’s Charity Match in aid of HELP for HEROES.  They timed it perfectly, arriving to a Heroes welcome just as play stopped for tea.

They have raised over £700 and are still counting.  We’d like to make it over £800 by the end of September – please give your support via bmycharity.com/Yeovilton2BuckhornWestonCricketClubWalk.

Jim Donnelly the club’s Irish overseas player for the 2011 season has returned home after his time with the club.  He put in several standout performances in the field and shocked with his batting ability and searing pace.

Jim was sad to leave the club, but was excited by his future plans; saying of his time at the club:  “Cut Me and I Bleed Buckhorn!”

Our 2011 Summer Ball  was held on July 2nd  –  a perfect summer’s evening  –  and was a great success.  The marquee was filled to capacity as was the dance floor.  After an excellent supper, we were entertained by the Larisa Russian Dance Group from Siberia who are the leading Russian amateur group and were in the UK especially for us.  They gave us a very colourful and energetic display with many changes of costume and tempo.  The dancing was to the Torn Off Strips, an Andover-based band who managed to keep us all on our toes.

Many thanks to all those who came and to all those who helped make the evening fun and successful.

The web site now has all the fixtures as well as other updates that are now published in the 2011 Fixtures List.  Printed copies of the Fixture List are available from your usual sources.  Please let me have all updates, news, corrections and comments.
